Virgin StartUp meetup: Winning Women Entrepreneurs

There’s a sobering figure in the UK business scene: just 19% - less than a fifth – of businesses in the UK are owned by women. Clearly, things need to change.

We know there are amazing would-be female entrepreneurs out there, because we work with them at Virgin StartUp every day. We’ve given away hundreds of loans to businesses all over the UK, and we’re proud to say that 40% of these have gone to businesses owned by women.

So we are holding an event for women who want to start their own business, or take their existing start-up to the next level. The world of female entrepreneurship is incredibly diverse and creative; we want to both celebrate this, and to provide the practical advice that gives women the confidence and resources to take their businesses even further.

Speakers:

Barbara Cox - Founder of Nutrichef

Inspired by food and health whilst living in Japan Barbara trained as a nutritionist and set up Nutrichef in the UK in 2004. Since then they have been creating healthy meal plans for busy people who want to lose weight, maintain a healthy lifestyle or achieve fitness goals. Nutrichef was sold in March 2015 and she set up BC Nutrition to continue consulting businesses on implementing strategies to improve productivity and consult individuals on health related issues.

Her work has enabled her to contribute to books including The Motorsport Fitness Manual and Teach Yourself Aromatherapy; trek 100 miles in the Sahara Desert for Help For Heroes, speak to a wide range of audiences about their health and well-being and be involved with some fantastic organisations such as the Porsche Human Performance Centre and the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Nikken in Europe and EgoStream Performance Centre in Sandbanks

Diana Parkes

Diana Parkes, is a leading authority on women in the world of work, the challenges they face, the reasons for these challenges and the most potent and practical solutions. Diana’s reputation is built on 20 years delivering exceptional commercial performance in front-line and senior management positions in global organisations such as Mars, Coca-Cola, Carlsberg and Glendinning Management Consultants and subsequently as a corporate coach and psychologist. She has led a five-year research programme to identify women’s critical strategies for success across a comprehensive range of workplaces and embedded them in the range of approaches you find here. So, now Diana’s focus is on using this unique foundation of knowledge to work with individuals and organisations to enable women to articulate what success means to them and to accelerate their progress towards their goals.

Lucienne Elms

Lucienne has worked in the equestrian sector all of her life, and for the past 15 years has ridden as a professional competition rider. She was very interested in uptake of Facebook, and now more so LinkedIn, Lucienne recognised that there were gaps in the market that these social and business platforms lacked specificity for, and wanted to form a recognised brand, strong and classy enough even that equestrian professionals sought after it, and desired to be associated with it. Her vision was never rigid with respect to functionality, and drive comes from knowing the space and market opportunity.
